Through My Eyes

Monday we had the opportunity to tour and learn about all of the programs offered to the homeless women living at N Street Village. What a wonderful program they have to offer these women. The program consists of many different aspects of improvement within a women's life from emotional, spiritual, financial, personal responsibility, acceptance and leading a healthy life.

We also got a chance to talk with the nurse that lead our tour. She was so insightful into the lives of the homeless. The one important thing that really struck me was when she said when giving the homeless on the street money that is our choice, how they decide to spend the money we choose to give them is up to the person we gave it to. We shouldn't be judgemental as to how they may spend it because if they decide to buy alcohol/drugs/cigarettes this may be the only decision they are able to make and this may be the only way they know how to decrease the stress they have.

Monday night we were able to get out and do a little sight seeing, as we were walking back to the Steinbruck Center around 9:00pm we came across these homeless men all tucked in for the night. They had made their beds for the night in a well lighted area and under a building overhang to help protect them from the light rain. This made me wonder do some of the homeless become a "family?" Do they travel throughout the city together, do they share their resources, how does a newly homeless person get accepted into a homeless "family?"
